As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?
Psalm 42:1-2
When we are thirsty and dehydrated the best thing quench that thirst is to drink plenty of water. We are advised medically to drink at least 8 cups of water a day. Our bodies are made up mostly of water and we can not go longer than five days without water or we will die.
- Water washes ( Ephesians 5:26)
- water cleanses ( John 3:5, Ezekiel 36:25-27, Psalms 119:9)
- water fills (Matthew 5:6, John 4:14, John 7:37-39)
- water sustains ( Numbers 20:11, Isaiah 55:10-11)
Now let us look at what the word of God says about water:
God is calling all who are thirsty to come and drink freely from His water. All who come to Him thirsting for truth and righteousness will be filled (Matthew 5:6). When we forsake our unrighteous ways and start to thirst for righteousness, we are first cleansed by water ( which is the word of God) before we're filled with the living water (Holy Ghost). This is what it means to be born again.
Here on earth, water is essential for life, water makes life possible. It covers 70 % of earth's surface and our bodies contain between 58% to 78% of water. A human being needs water more than food. So what we see here in the physical is a reflection of the spiritual. We see how that life would be impossible without water, and the word of God says that Jesus is life and He gives the living water. Our bodies need water to survive and live but above all we need the living water. We need living water that gives eternal life!
And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
Revelation 22:17
Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
Ezekiel 36-25-27
People are usually concerned with nourishing their bodies and spending money on maintaining and taking care of the flesh, while they overlook and ignore their souls which are starving and perishing. We are like tender plants planted in a garden and without being fed we wither and die. A plant needs good soil and water, it might survive for a while in dry ground but eventually without water to sustain it, the plant dies. We cannot survive without the husbandman taking care of us and feeding us, we are to be depended on the Father and Jesus Christ who promised to give us the living water. We need that living water to grow, blossom and bring forth fruit. Jesus has to be our foundation.
So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. 1 Corinthians 3:7
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
John 15:5
For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Isaiah 55:10-11
The word of God which is like water/rain when it is poured into someone's heart (soil) a seed is then planted and when that heart is ready, the seed starts to grow and produces good fruit. The more you immerse yourself in the word of God, the more it cleanses you of all uncleanness. And the more you are transformed into the image of Christ. Come and drink freely of His water, all who are thirsting!
Baptism which means ' to immerse' represents us dying to our old ways, turning to the Lord with a purified conscience for a new life with Him. ( 1 Peter 3:21, Romans 6:4, Colossians 2:12, Galatians 3:27, Acts 9:18)
A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.
And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.
And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Luke 8:5
